Biodiversity that awakens passions
The Amazon forest is the largest rainforest in the world, home to a rich biodiversity of fauna and flora. With such exuberance, it is not surprising that the region attracts people from different parts of the country to study and protect its biodiversity.
In this week's Liberal Amazon article, you will learn about the stories of professionals who arrived, fell in love with and adjusted their lives to research and help conserve the fauna and flora of the Amazon.
We also talked to local experts, who highlighted the importance of collaboration with professionals from other regions and even countries, always respecting the Amazon and its inhabitants.

Agriculture and environment in the same direction
When discussing the environment, the most frequent topics that emerge are combating deforestation and restoring forests. But there is a usually overlooked aspect which happened to be very vivid, this year, at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 27): regenerative agriculture, which defends a way of producing whilst recovering the land and the environment.
In regenerative agriculture, soil health care is a priority, as much as the promotion of biodiversity and the quality of the food produced. The good news is that it has already been applied in the Brazilian Amazon, although it needs to be expanded.

Agriculture and environment in the same direction

From the Amazon rainforest to the desert, the 18-year-old indigenous woman Tainara Kambeba traveled four hours by boat and 2 and a half days including flights and stopovers to bring her experience and ideas about the environment from her home near Manaus (AM) to Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. Likewise, many young people took up the spaces and were protagonists in the discussions at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change, COP 27, held until November 18.
COP 27 annually brings together representatives from several countries to seek solutions and sign agreements to overcome environmental problems. This year, young people were highlighted with unprecedented opportunities: they had a pavilion of their own, an even bigger one than the pavilions of many national delegations at the event.

COP 27: Youth voices in defense of the Amazon

Amazon emerges solidly in the speeches of Luís Inácio Lula da Silva, in his first address to the nation, after being elected the next president of Brazil, on October 30th. On several occasions, Lula referred to the Amazon as one of the priorities in his presidential term, stressing that “Brazil and the planet need a living Amazon”.
After the presidential election outcome, leaders from different countries expressed interest in collaborating with Brazil, under Lula’s direction. Internal national scenario, however, points to many challenges towards the consolidation of the commitments undertaken in the campaign.

Future foresees protagonism

Parauapebas is a municipality that emerged and expanded based on mining activity. It is where Serra Norte dos Carajás is located – the largest mineralogical province in the world. However, given the estimate that mineral resources will run out in approximately 16 years, the municipality has sought to develop an alternative economic matrix, focusing on the tourist sector, as a way to continue developing and creating employment opportunities and income alternatives for the population. Proposals include investments in three tourist complexes.

In parallel, Vale is already carrying out environmental recovery in the mining sites whose activities have ended. The process begins with the storage of 60 kg to 70 kg of seeds per month of various types of native trees, such as Jaborandi and Ipê, collected by the Cooperativa dos Extrativistas da Flona de Carajás [National Forest of Carajás].

Post-mining on the tourism trail

Mosquitos, abelhas e insetos, em geral, fazem parte da realidade de quem vive na Amazônia, mesmo nos centros urbanos. Para alguns, eles podem ser considerados um incômodo e, para muitos, passar despercebidos.
Mas os insetos têm papel fundamental para a preservação da biodiversidade na região, pois são responsáveis por espalharem nutrientes e sementes na floresta, fazendo com que mais plantas possam crescer, além de atuarem na decomposição de matéria orgânica e servirem de alimento para outros animais.
Segundo o pesquisador do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA), José Albertino Rafael, 70% das espécies de animais que existem na natureza em todo o planeta são de insetos.

O aumento nos preços do açaí

Da floresta amazônica ao deserto, a jovem Tainara Kambeba, de 18 anos, viajou por quatro horas de barco e 2 dias e meio entre voos e escalas para levar sua experiência e ideias sobre o meio ambiente, desde sua casa, nas proximidades de Manaus (AM), até Sharm El Sheikh, no Egito. Assim como a indígena, muitos jovens ocuparam os espaços e foram protagonistas nas discussões da Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre Mudanças Climáticas, a COP 27, realizada até 18 de novembro.

A COP reúne, anualmente, representantes de vários países para buscar soluções e firmar acordos para superar problemas ambientais. Neste ano, os jovens receberam destaque como nunca antes: tiveram um pavilhão só deles, maior até mesmo que de muitas delegações nacionais no evento.

The increase in acai prices

Mosquitoes, bees and insects, in general, are part of the reality of those who live in the Amazon, even in urban centers. For some people, they can be considered a burden and, for many others, they can simply go unnoticed.
However, insects play a key role in preserving biodiversity in the region, as they are responsible for spreading nutrients and seeds in the forest, allowing more plants to grow, in addition to decomposing organic matter and serving as food for other animals.
According to José Albertino Rafael – a researcher at the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA) [National Institute for Research in the Amazon], 70% of the species of animals that exist in nature all over the planet are insects.
